In Antrim on Ireland’s North Coast is one of the most iconic and geographic landscapes and tourist destinations the Giant’s Causeway. Made up of around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns that were created 50-60 million years ago from volcanic fissure eruptions.
According to legend however the columns are the remains of a Causeway built by the giant Fionn Mac Cumhaill otherwise known as Finn MacCool. Fionn had built the Causeway to reach and face his rival, the Scottish giant, Benandonner. When Fionn realized how large his rival was he retreated to his home. Benandonner reached the home of Fionn only to be told that he was not there. Instead Fionn had been disguised as a baby by his wife. A large baby at that! When Benandonner set eyes on him he could only imagine how large his father would be and he retreated back to Scotland destroying the Causeway along the way so that Fionn could not reach him. Some of the remains of the Causeway can also be found in Scotland at Fingal’s Cave.
